Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for TL&LC

 

 

1. What is The Literacy and Learning Center (TL&LC)?

TL&LC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive, and free educational programs to learners of all ages in Macon County. Our goal is to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning, building a stronger, more literate community.

 

 

2. What age students do you serve?

We offer learning opportunities for people of all ages, from birth to adults.

 

3. What programs do you offer?

We offer a variety of educational programs, all provided at no cost to our participants:

  • Dolly Parton Imagination Library: Early intervention is offered to the youngest residents of Macon County through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Funded by ReadToMe and The Literacy & Learning Center, books are sent monthly to children from birth to 5 years old. 

  • Pre-K Program: A structured program for our youngest learners (ages 3–5) focusing on kindergarten readiness, social-emotional development, and literacy skills through engaging, meaningful play.

  • After-School Program: Academic support and enrichment activities for students in grades K-8. We provide homework assistance, tutoring, and educational activities enhanced by partnerships with local non-profits.

  • Individual Tutoring: One-on-one, personalized instruction available for youth in any subject where focused support is needed.

  • Adult Education: One-on-one, personalized instruction available for adults.

  • ESL (English as a Second Language): 

  • GED (high school equivalency test): Self-paced online preparatory courses are offered to help students pass the GED test and better prepare them for the workforce. Follow-up equivalency test fees at area testing sites are also covered.

 

 

3. Is there a fee for any of the programs?

No. All of TL&LC’s educational programs—including Pre-K, After-School, and Individual Tutoring—are offered at no cost to ensure that financial barriers never prevent a child or adult from accessing essential educational support.

 

 

4. How can I enroll my child or myself in a program?

Registration information and forms are available online.

  • For After-School and Individual Tutoring (Youth/Adults): Please visit the "Programs" section of our website.

  • For the Pre-K Program: Contact our Programs Manager, Caroline Cox, for specific enrollment dates and required documentation.

 

5. Where is TL&LC located?

The Literacy and Learning Center is located in Highlands, North Carolina, and serves the greater Macon County community. We are at 675 S 4th Street, next to Bryson’s Food Store.

 

 

6. How is TL&LC funded?

As a non-profit organization, TL&LC is funded entirely by private donors, community fundraising events, and grants. We rely heavily on the continuous financial commitment of the Highlands community to keep our programs tuition-free.

 

 

7. How can I help support TL&LC?

There are two main ways to support our mission:

  • Volunteer: We rely on dedicated volunteers for our tutoring and classroom support. Whether you can commit to a regular schedule or assist with special projects, your time is invaluable.

  • Donate: Financial contributions are essential for covering operational costs, classroom supplies, technology, and staff salaries. Donations can be made through our website or by contacting our office.

 

 

8. Who is on the Board of Directors?

The TL&LC Board of Directors is composed of local community leaders and stakeholders committed to the Center's mission and financial oversight. Information about our board members is typically available on our website under the "About Us" section.
