"There is little to fear and so much to gain. Hearing a student say he enjoys reading is the goal,
and it happens more often as the months pass.
I’m confident that he will soon be able to say,
 ‘I’ll take it from here.'"

Dolly Parton Imagination Library

This wonderful program, funded by generous individual donations from our community, sends age-appropriate books to children in Macon County for free every month from birth until the child's 5th birthday. It only takes $30 to sponsor a child  for an entire year! You can help grow the love of reading for the youngest readers of Macon County!

Many people don't know...

Dolly Parton Imagination Library Local Affiliates are responsible for enrolling children who live within the geographical area they offered the program in. While the Imagination Library negotiates wholesale pricing for the books, the Local Affiliate is responsible for securing funds to cover that cost. Books are 100% free to enrolled children because their Local Affiliate has secured funds to cover the cost of the books and the shipping fees.

TL&LC is the local affiliate for Macon County's Imagination Library.

OPPORTUNITIES

VOLUNTEER

The Literacy & Learning Center has many opportunities for volunteer work across all of our programs. No specific experience is required and we have options for a variety of interests, skillsets, and schedules.
After-School Program

Volunteers and staff help guide students in the group setting during TL&LC's After-School Programs through their homework and supplemental educational activities. The schedule for After-School help is flexible, and the program runs from 3:15pm - 5:00pm, weekdays.

Early Learners

The Literacy & Learning Center works with Macon County child care organizations to provide early literacy programs for our littlest learners.

Individual Tutoring

Tutors are matched with students based on student age and area of need.

Volunteers with skills in upper level math, for example, are matched accordingly. For any match, the only requirement is interest in helping a child learn. Sessions are typically one hour twice a week. A background in education or

experience working with youth is a plus,

but not required.

Star
Events/Administrative

bulk mailings.

Summer Camps

TL&LC hosts educational summer camps each year to provide an enriching learning environment for students while they aren't in school. Volunteers assist with fun and educational activities provided by

The Literacy & Learning Center.

English as a Second Language Classes

TL&LC hosts a free weekly English language class open to all at The Presbyterian Church in Highlands. Volunteers assist the instructor and can help provide individual attention.
