Celebrating Young Authors: The Literacy & Learning Center Hosts "All About Us" Book Debut

Updated: 4 days ago

The Literacy & Learning Center’s Pre-K program reached a creative milestone on Friday, April 24, with a special release party for their latest collaborative project, a class book titled “All About Us.” Eleven young authors contributed to the work, each crafting a personal page that featured their name, age, preferred foods, and favorite colors and animals. The children also shared heartfelt reflections on what they love and what they hope to become.

The project, which spanned several weeks, allowed students to add unique flair through original illustrations. Pre-K Director Carolyn Middlebrooks noted that while children naturally focus on their own experiences, the book served as a vital tool for learning about their peers.

Carolyn also included photographs of year-long activities, turning the volume into a cherished keepsake similar to a yearbook.

During the event, students took turns presenting their work to an audience of parents and classmates. The ceremony was filled with proud smiles, highlighting the emotional significance of the achievement for local families. Afterward, attendees celebrated with refreshments and snacks.

The creative process provided a wealth of educational benefits beyond art. Carolyn highlighted the educational aspects the students developed with the project, such as:

•              Literacy and Art: Practicing name writing and drawing.

•              Technical Knowledge: Learning about the various parts of a book and the steps involved in the publishing process.

•              Public Speaking: Building the confidence to stand and speak in front of a group—an impressive feat for the Pre-K level.

The highlight of the class was the presentation of the physical copies.  Each child beamed when receiving their own copy and were given time to share their books with their parents, friends, and staff. Seeing their work in professional print provided a significant boost to the students' self-esteem. Staff expressed their pride in the class, noting that the children showed great initiative and followed a structured, step-by-step approach to complete their pages.

“Early literacy experiences play a critical role in shaping lifelong learners,” said Bonnie Potts, Executive Director of The Literacy & Learning Center.  “I am incredibly proud of each of these students for the hard work and courage they showed in creating and presenting their books.  I’m also so grateful to their teachers, Carolyn and Violetta, for the love, patience, and dedication they pour into our Pre-K program every day.”
