New Leadership and Board Members at The Literacy & Learning Center

The Literacy & Learning Center is proud to announce the appointment of Cal Isaacs as the new Board Chair, alongside the addition of two distinguished community members, Helene Siegel and Nathan Salsbury, to the Board of Directors.

Introducing Cal Isaacs, Board Chair

Stepping into the role of Board Chair holds deep personal significance for Cal Isaacs, who follows the legacy of three remarkable educators in his family: his mother, a retired principal, and his grandmother and great-grandmother. Their commitment to nurturing a love of reading in both children and adults inspires his service today.

A native of Griffin, Georgia, Cal has served as the Human Resources Manager at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital / Eckerd Living Center since 2022. His extensive professional background includes senior leadership roles at Rite Aid Pharmacy, GameStop, and Performance Food Group. Cal transitioned to Highlands as a full-time resident in 2022 and enjoys hiking, gardening, and home restoration with his spouse, Derek.

Welcoming New Board Members

The Center is also privileged to welcome two new members who bring a wealth of educational and community experience to the organization:

  • Nathan Salsbury: Nathan joined the Board in October 2025. With an MA in English from NCSU, he spent over two decades (2000–2024) teaching British and American Literature, as well as Composition & Rhetoric, at Campbell University. After returning to Highlands in 2024, he now brings his academic expertise to the Center’s mission. In his leisure time, Nathan enjoys cooking, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his dog, Ruby.

  • Helene Siegel: Holding a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Georgia, Helene has a diverse professional history ranging from clinical counseling to business ownership. Along with her husband, Ricky, she operated the 4 ½ Street Inn for twenty years. Helene’s long-standing dedication to Highlands is evident through her past work with the Chamber of Commerce, the Town Planning Board, and the Counseling Center of Highlands. After previously serving with the Literacy Council, she is pleased to return to the board.

A Shared Mission

The arrival of these leaders ensures the continued strength of the Center’s vital mission. It takes the collective support of a fantastic community for The Literacy & Learning Center to operate, and there is deep appreciation for all who contribute to these efforts.
