Celebrating Freedom & Resilience: Congratulations to Highlands' Newest U.S. Citizen!

Building on the inspiring success of individual tutoring efforts, which previously helped TLLC student Violeta successfully pass her exam and become a U.S. citizen, The Literacy & Learning Center launched a brand-new structured Citizenship class earlier this year. Designed to prepare local adult learners for every step of the naturalization process, the class continues to run strong today, with a second session potentially being offered later this year to meet growing interest in the community.

It is through these very opportunities that TL&LC is thrilled to celebrate with Jacky Reyes Hannan, Highlands’ newest citizen of the United States!

Achieving citizenship requires immense dedication, months of rigorous study, and a deep understanding of U.S. history, government, and civics. Jacky’s hard work, perseverance, and commitment to this goal serve as an absolute inspiration to everyone at TL&LC.

This incredible accomplishment was supported every step of the way by TL&LC's extraordinary Adult Education instructor, Faviola Olvera. Faviola’s unwavering dedication to her students goes far beyond the classroom. Not only does she tirelessly guide learners through the complex preparation for the naturalization exam, but her devotion is so deep that she frequently travels alongside her students to cheer them on in person at their official swearing-in ceremonies!

In Her Own Words: A Brief Q&A with Jacky

How did TL&LC help you with the citizenship process?

"Being in a class made a huge difference. I don't think it would have been easy to study everything on my own. The classes kept me on track, and having a teacher who really knew the material made it much easier to understand and remember."

How will this change your life?

"It will open doors for me; for example, I can continue my education. I will also have a greater sense of stability, not just for me, but for my family as well."

What is the first thing you did as a citizen?

"The first thing I did was register to vote. Becoming a citizen is one of the proudest moments of my life, and the opportunity to vote is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities that comes with it. For me, voting is more than just casting a ballot—it's having a voice, giving back to the country I proudly call home, and helping shape its future. I don't take that responsibility for granted, and I'm deeply grateful and incredibly excited to participate in the democratic process for the very first time."

Faviola’s mentorship and Jacky’s determination represent the absolute heart of TL&LC's Adult Education and Citizenship programs. Watching local neighbors achieve their dreams and step into this new chapter is a powerful reminder of why free, accessible education matters so much to the Highlands community.
