The Literacy and Learning Center successfully hosted its annual Celebration of Education fundraiser on September 30, drawing strong community support with a special appearance by global bestselling author and philanthropist, David Baldacci.
The day's events began with an engaging hour-long Author’s Presentation at the Performing Arts Center, followed by an intimate dinner for patrons at the Old Edwards Club in the evening.
During his public talk, Mr. Baldacci, whose books have sold over two hundred million copies worldwide, touched upon a variety of topics, offering both humorous anecdotes and serious reflections on the profound importance of literacy and the power of literature. He emphasized the necessity of a literate society for a healthy democracy, specifically stating that literacy is the “key to getting rid of ignorance.”
The author offered broader reflections on the overarching themes of his work, emphasizing the necessity of community support and resilience during difficult times. Following the presentation, Baldacci met with attendees for a book signing.
The event’s fundraising success was significantly boosted by Mr. Baldacci’s own generosity. The author donated an impressive $50,000 to TL&LC. Inspired by his commitment, several event guests pledged an additional $50,000 as a matching grant, creating a fundraising challenge with a potential total of $150,000 for the Center’s programs.
The Literacy and Learning Center extends its deepest gratitude to David Baldacci for his insightful presentation and extraordinary donation. The Center also wishes to thank every supporter, donor, and patron whose generosity and enthusiasm made Celebration of Education a resounding success. The funds raised are vital to TL&LC's mission of advancing literacy and promoting lifelong learning for children, adults, and families throughout the community.
